Mr Rector of the College of Europe,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear friends,

It is a great pleasure for me to be here today with you on the occasion of the second Arenberg-Coimbra Group Prize Award.
Last year, the Prize went to a Finnish student from the University of Turku, Mila Oiva, who studied at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow as part of her Finnish master degree.
This year the 5.000 EURO Prize goes again to a student from Finland, namely to Ms Sofia Lemmetyinen from Abo Akademi University, Finland. She spent one year at the Université Catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve. The title of her master thesis was: “On the borderline between Dialogue and Diplomacy – the Catholic Lay Organisation Comunità di Sant’Egidio as a Transnational Actor”. Congratulations to her and to all the students of the College of Europe.

The Prize Arenberg-Coimbra Group was the idea of Minister of State Mark Eyskens, chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Arenberg Foundations and the result of the enthusiasm of Professor Guido Langouche, Chairman of the Coimbra Group Executive Board and Dr. Inge Knudsen, Director, Coimbra Group Office.

The Arenberg-Coimbra Group Prize is a contribution to the construction of Europe and to the expansion of knowledge in every field of activity.
Every year, all 38 members of the Coimbra Group of Universities can designate three candidates per university to apply for the Prize.
The winner is the one who can convince the jury in four pages that his or her stay abroad within the Erasmus exchange program contributed significantly to his or her master thesis or doctorate.

La famille d’Arenberg est une famille européenne, qui a vécu à cheval entre 8 pays pendant plusieurs siècles.
Nous sommes des Européens convaincus et rêvons des Etats-Unis d’Europe, une grande puissance capable à nouveau de traiter d’égal à égal avec les Grands de ce monde, à savoir les Etats-Unis d’Amérique, la Chine, la Russie et bientôt l’Inde et le Brésil.
Dans un monde toujours encore régi par les rapports de force, il est important d’être fort pour être respecté et surtout écouté. Sans écoute, impossible de faire passer un message de paix, de fraternité et de tolérance.

Viele Europäer klagen und behaupten, dass Europa nur von oben gemacht wird, von Brüssel, wo Tausende von Bürokraten den Steuerzahlern aus allen Ländern ein Vermögen kosten.
Mit unserer bescheidenen Aktion, wollen wir einfach beweisen, dass es auch anders geht, und dass wir alle eine persönliche Verantwortung haben. Europa ist nicht nur Sache der Berufspolitiker, sondern auch Sache der Europäischen Bürger.
Anstatt zu klagen, sollen wir doch lieber einen positiven Beitrag leisten und anpacken, wo immer es geht.

De Arenberg-stichtingen (www.arenbergfoundation.eu) bevorderen geschiedenis en cultuur omdat wij  een zeer rijk archief bezitten. Onze oudste oorkonde dateert uit 911 maar het Arenberg Archief is nog aan het groeien. Wij blijven overtuigd, dat geschiedenis, de gezamenlijke ervaring van onze  voorouders, ons kan helpen de huidige wereld beter te begrijpen en onze toekomst beter voor te bereiden.

E un piacere per noi potere passare alcuni momenti in questo prestigioso collegio, dove studia la gente giovane che vienne da tutti i paesi europei e chi sarà in poco tempo in posizioni d’influenza nei settori della politica europea, della economia e della cultura. I premii Arenberg-Coimbra Group sono destinati ai studenti, e particolarmente a quelli che hanno investito il loro futuro professionale nella costruzione europea.

Europa tiene una grande suerte: aquí se hablan lenguas internacionales; son internacionales porque se hablan también en muchos países del mundo. La primera globalización empezó con los descubrimientos hay cinco siglos  y la segunda con los imperios coloniales europeos en el siglo diecinueve. La globalización actual, la tercera,  empezó en otras partes del mundo, más dinámicas que nuestro continente. Pero tenemos todavía una ventaja importante: el castellano, el Francés, el holandés, el ingles, el  portugués y el ruso nos abren puertas. Incumbe o nosotros  aprovechar estas oportunidades de manera inteligente.

O caràcter multi-linguistico que se encontra aqui na Europa dá-nos a possibilidade de perceber melhor a diversidade cultural do nosso mundo e facilita as comunicações. A Europa ainda pode desempenhar um papel muito importante e esse será o maior desafio da geração que se encontra a estudar aqui no colégio de Europa.
