Exhibition - Mary of Hungary. Art and Power during the Renaissance
back to the overview
From 22 November 2025 to 10 May 2026, the Domaine & Royal Museum of Mariemont presents “Mary of Hungary. Art and Power during the Renaissance”, an exhibition highlighting the political, diplomatic, and artistic role of a key figure of the 16th century: Mary of Hungary, sister of Charles V and ruler of the Low Countries.
Historical works and multisensory installations—combining 3D models, music, imagery, animation, dance, and video—offer a fresh perspective on the Renaissance.
The Arenberg Archives are lending several pieces from their collection to help illustrate this fascinating story.
A powerful woman and strategist
The exhibition delves into the epic propaganda programme developed by Mary of Hungary and her entourage between 1539 and 1559. Prestige and majesty merge in a skilful staging designed for the imperial family, through which she not only influenced European art of the period but also reshaped the borders of various territories. A true woman of power and innovation, she employed influential Italian artists, planned a breathtaking tour to present the heir, organised the military defence of the Low Countries, and commissioned the construction of a palace in Binche and a vast hunting estate in Mariemont.
“Mary of Hungary. Art and Power during the Renaissance” returns to the origins of Mariemont to reach the heart of 16th-century Europe. Under the auspices of the House of Habsburg, the exhibition recounts one of the major historical events of the Renaissance!
